The relationship between subject and object is at the heart of Stanciu’s approach - posing herself in (often uncomfortable) domestic tableaux, using props which accentuate the oddness, she excels in unsettling and confounding the expectations of the viewer.
There is sometimes something darkly familiar about her images, as if she is conjuring some fairy-tale archetype, or perhaps a deep-rooted and melancholic myth, but her work also suggests a sense of the absurd delivered with the self-awareness and control of a dancer.
