Ceal Floyer & Dan Flavin

15 - 22 December 2007

Ceal Floyer's work takes many forms but it is always imbued with her own very particular sense of humour and a keen awareness of the absurdity of life. Floyer creates concise sculptural installations that are deceptive in their apparent simplicity - never quite what they seem, but never pretending to be anything else. With an impressive clarity of thought and endless wit and ingenuity she uses ordinary objects and materials common to our daily lives and transforms our perception of them with the purest economy, teasing out for us a web of new meanings. Every part of the piece - its title, materials and surroundings are exhaustively put to work by Floyer in service of her ideas.

Floyer was born in Karachi, Pakistan in 1965 and lives and works in Berlin. In September 2007 she was awarded the prestigious Preis der Nationalgalerie fur Junge Kunst at the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin and this year has held solo exhibitions at Centre d'Art Santa Monica, Barcelona; Kerguehennec, Bignan, France, and Museum Haus Esters, Krefeld, Germany.

Our exhibition focused on Floyer's 'Door' (1995), an illusionistic strip of brilliant white light projected onto a closed door so the light seems to flood from beneath, offering the possibility of a world beyond. This will be paired with a simple fluorescent light sculpture from 1970 by the celebrated American minimalist Dan Flavin (1933-1996).
