and per se and is a rolling sequence of exhibitions where one work is paired with another for two weekly periods, across a stretch of 12 months. In the current phase of the sequence, three monochromatic ambrotypes of crumpled paper by Ben Cauchi will be joined by three crumpled sculptures, in graphite and paper, by Susan Collis. Collis uses a variety of techniques and strategies to investigate issues of interpretation, craft, value and labour. Apparently everyday objects, which at first glance seem throwaway - almost meaningless - are in fact very carefully constructed. There is an obvious visual and material connection to Cauchi’s ambrotypes, but there is also a conceptually driven sense of intent, and a certain amount of humour in the way that both artists ask us to reconsider the most modest of subjects. Susan Collis’ commission for the University of Edinburgh in Bristo Square, Edinburgh titles The Next Big Thing in a Series of Little Things will be unveiled in the late Autumn of 2017.
