On the 16th of June First There is a Mountain, a new participatory artwork by Katie Paterson, comes to Portobello Beach.
Head over to Portobello Beach to take part or to watch as participants use a set of buckets in the form of world mountains created by Paterson to build sand mountain ranges across the beach.
The work will play out the world’s natural geography and geology against the sea’s tidal times, as each mountain is formed and eroded within the cycle of a day. Each pail is a scale model of one of five mountains: Mount Kilimanjaro (Africa), Mount Shasta (N. America), Mount Fuji (Asia), Stromboli (Europe), and Uluru (Oceania).
The event is free and welcome to all.
