Jeu de Paume presents Marine Hugonnier's first major exhibition in France, Cinema in the Stomach.
Cinema in the Stomach brings together a selection of works since Hugonnier's beginnings in 1998, and follows her artistic approach over more than two decades.
At the border of documentary and fiction, Hugonnier's films, photography and works on paper, explore the politics of the gaze and the cultural and political frameworks that inform each point of view, particularly in the making of an image.
Having traveled a lot with her Aaton 16mm camera, Hugonnier's work can be associated with visual anthropology, adopting the posture of reporter and ethnographer more than that of artist, her field of investigation being the space that separates the subject from the observer.
Hugonnier's artistic research is particularly interested in the seperation of subject and observer in relation to feminism, gender fluidity, anti-colonialism and the convergence between human and non-human.
This major exhibition presents a selection of works, some previously unseen in public and some revisited, and includes a film specifically produced for the Jeu de Paume.
