The K11 Foundation in Shanghai presents a major solo exhibition of over 40 paintings of Caroline Walker, celebrating her intimate snapshots of the everyday female experience.
As Walker begins her artistic process by shadowing her subjects and capturing photographs, often without their realisation, her canvases become a gateway for the viewer who is invited to both observe and inhabit these personal spaces. The subject matter of the paintings range from women at work, domestic life, family and leisure, each scene imbued with similar dignity. She intentionally blurs the boundaries between the public and private spheres in order to honour the often unseen aspects of women's daily lives and, in her own words, give these women 'voice and agency.'
The K11 Foundation invites visitors to meditate on the various social, cultural and economic factors afffecting women in contemporary society, with several paintings on display for the first time.
