Prima Materia: The Periodic Table in Contemporary Art
The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum
258 Main St, Ridgefield
CT 06877, USA
February 5 - August 27, 2023
The exhibition, curated by The Aldrich's former Exhibitions Director, Richard Klein, explores the links between art and the elements of the periodic table as a way to think about the material world.
Aristotle that first put forward the concept of 'Prima materia', to describe the base matter that makes up all things. Since then, history has come to define major epochs through the materials that shaped them: stone, bronze, iron, and now silicon. By linking artworks to elements, the show invites us to consider again matters of resource extraction and the circulation of materials that give rise to our shared moment in time.
