Kestle Barton welcomes David Batchelor's Concretos series in their first exhibition of 2023. Concretos, a body of work first begun in 2011, was inspired by an encounter with a low cement wall embedded with shards of coloured glass in Sicily. Batchelor's works, in response, feature brightly coloured objects - glass, plastic off-cuts, studio detritus and other found objects, which are then set into a concrete base. The title I-Cons and Ex-Cons refers to Batchelor's studio shorthand for the more recent works in this series: Inter-Concretos and the Extra-Concretos, which will be exhibited alongside a new work made from hundreds of off-cuts from earlier sculptures but without a base - a Non-Con.
