This winter, the Southbank Centre is lit up by a series of outdoor artworks, created by ten contemporary artists. Each artist uses light and colour in playful ways, at the same time exploring topics at the forefront of society, such as individual and collective identity, the environment and technology.

David Batchelor’s Sixty Minute Spectrum (2017) is amongst the featured works, transforming large parts of the Southbank Centre site into an enormous colourful clock. Beginning the hour as a vivid red, the pyramid rooflights move gradually through the entire visual spectrum – at times throughout the cycle appearing orange, yellow, green, blue, purple or pink – before returning once more to red. Sixty Minute Spectrum is part of Batchelor’s ongoing exploration of the intense, synthetic colour that characterises modern cities.

The exhibition is best viewed at night, but you can see them whenever the Centre is open. The exhibition also features work by Jakob Kvist, David Ogle, Fred Tschida, Tim Etchells, Leo Villareal, Marinella Senatore, Kendall Geers and Denman+Gould with Maeve Polkinhorn.
