This summer, ARTSHED GLAISDALE present an exhibition of work by artists James Hugonin and Nick Kennedy, exploring the close bond between their practices through an affinity to time, process, systems and the parameters that they set themselves.
The show's title Always and Never the Same was coined by Ralph Waldo Emerson in his essay History, which discusses the ever-shifting temporality of nature and how it is in a state of perpetual flux, yet remains reliable at its core. The exhibition explores how both Kennedy and Hugonin produce rules and boundaries for ways of working, but there is always space within these parameters for intuitive improvisation; both inviting chance and embracing the way it challenges their self-imposed strictures.
