James Hugonin: Fluctuations in Elliptical Form

A new publication accompanying an exhibition of James Hugonin at Ingleby, Edinburgh, 29 January - 26 March, 2022. 

This book marks the end of James Hugonin's most recent series, Fluctuations in Elliptical Form, eight paintings begun in 2015 and completed at the end of 2021. At a little over two metres in height, Fluctuations in Elliptical Form are the largest paintings of Hugonin's career and represent forty years of experimentation with the rectangular grid.

The end of this series now marks a moment of change in Hugonin's work, a shift towards a new phase of exploration and research. With essays by Anya Hurlbert, Chris Yetton and Alex Charrington, this new publication reflects on the development of Hugonin's system-based approach to painting and its culmination in Fluctuations in Elliptical Form.
